Blair did something similar regarding new treaties

Correct. He has always left in that caveat with which to fool the public into believing we will get a referendum.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
Going back to that idiot Blair & his stance, if he had his way we'd be in the Euro right now & all be better off according to him.

That would have been done without a vote either & it was only Brown that blocked him.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
I don't really see the fuss about the EU Referendum, why it would win Cameron any votes, or why it would be suicide.

It's no different to what he did in Scotland, he'll campaign to stay in but will give people the chance to choose. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Cheers. So possibly Cameron is using the referendum as an election winner when all along he knows he can go and negotiate in Brussels, come back and sell it as a better for deal for the UK and stay in the EU. Which is probably what he wants all along.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
Cameron has said that he will first go to Brussels and negotiate better terms than right now. He will then set up a in/out referendum.

Good points.

I wonder if Cameron is using the referendum as a weight to push Brussels into making changes?

What would Brussels opinion if the UK left?

I am pretty sure Germany and France would not want to see one of their biggest ally contributors leave as it would mean they may be burdened with any future bail out costs. It seems to me that UK, France and Germany are the foundations that hold the others together and to lose the UK would be disaster for them.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
Why would it be suicide for Cameron, he promised a referendum and is sticking to it. He has said many times that he favours staying IN but in tune with most of the electorate he wants to see some changes.

Let's be clear if we leave the EU and want the same trading rights with it as Norway and Switzerland we have to comply with the EU rules as they do.

Can I also say I have no idea why labour thought wheeling tony Blair out to,lecture everyone on the eu was a good idea.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
I think it would be a narrow out right now if a vote was held. People are very concerned about immigration and are also increasingly aware that we pay more into the eu than we get out of it.

The idea that suddenly we'd fall into recession and no one would ever trade with is is a complete nonsense.

My concern has always been the same. If we leave we are pulling a large funding source for the eu. The idea they won't retaliate is also a nonsense.

If we leave with no repercussions then there's nothing stopping anyone else doing it too and that's the eus worst nightmare.

I am generally torn. I am concerned the end of freedom of movement hasn't been thought through but I also find the agruement that somehow we can't possibly cope without the eu to be nonsense.

Re: In/Out Referendum.
I think so, actually think it'll mirror the result in the Scotland vote & be something like 55/45 to stay in. Obviously that's just a guess & a gut feel on my part.

100% there should be a vote on it.

I'm note sure I'd class it as propaganda, it'll be highlighting all the pros & exaggerating those & trying to not talk about all the cons. The anti side will be doing exactly the same. However, that's life generally not just for voting.

Sadly, I do fear that the "Stay in's " will class anyone saying "Get out " as being racist & try & close down any debate & it's that that grates despite the fact that on balance, at present but not 100% decided , I'd vote to stay in.

Like most things it's not a simple black & white issue & will be pros & cons for & against.

It does amuse me that with whatever political divide you come from, Labour supporters claim everything the Tories say do is wrong & Tories likewise with Labour. It's not just those two parties, but all of them. No one party represents all my views that's for sure.

However, that's the nature of adversarial politics.

Russ, they will bombard the public with pro propaganda like they did the last time and with the Scotland better together vote

I'm not sure.

Out for me and not just about immigration but generally managing our own country. I'm loathed giving billions in aid when we are ploughing money into Comic Relief and other charity events.
